ZZ Plant

Four Reasons You Want a ZZ Plant in Your Home

If you’ve been agonizing over how to fill that empty living room corner, the ZZ plant is the houseplant that just might fit the bill.

You may know this plant by its other common moniker, Zanzibar Gem, or perhaps even it’s tongue-twisting scientific name, Zamioculcas zamiifolia. No matter what you call it, this plant is sure to bring you joy through its beautiful looks and easy care routine.

Read on to learn more about what makes the ZZ plant the perfect plant for your home.

1. It’s a very attractive houseplant

The ZZ plant looks stunning without even trying. With its large, dark green leaves, it’s the perfect indoor plant for homes and offices alike, as it can be displayed on a desk or be grown as a floor plant. This versatility makes it an ideal plant to grow indoors.

On of the ZZ plant’s most stunning characteristics is its shiny, smooth leaves. Those dark green leaves literally sparkle without any effort, which is what makes it a top-choice decorative piece for any home or office owner looking to add aesthetic value to their property.

As a floor plant, the ZZ plant can grow as tall as 40 to 60 centimeters. It is actually known as a flowering plant, but doesn’t always produce blooms. Nevertheless, the shiny, fleshy leaves alone are sure to please the eye.

With its gorgeous beauty, it’s no wonder the ZZ plant is becoming a go-to indoor decorative plant. No matter where you put it, it can instantly brighten up a room.

2. It has health benefits

On top of its visual appeal, plant enthusiasts love the ZZ plant for providing health-boosting benefits. In a study conducted by the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Plant and Environmental Science, it was found that the ZZ plant has the ability to purify the air by removing toxic substances like benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene.

While it possesses both form and function, the ZZ plant has one flaw to note: it is toxic to humans and pets. Any part of this houseplant is poisonous when ingested by your furry companion.

To humans, the ZZ plant can be toxic when the leaves are consumed, but that’s easily avoidable, isn’t it? When handling, it can cause minor burning and skin irritation, so make sure to wear some gloves or wash your hands after interacting with the plant and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

3. It’s easy to grow and care for

The ZZ Plant traces its origins back to Africa, where it has been known to thrive in drought-prone areas. It comes from the same family of houseplants as aglaonemas, dieffenbachias, and pothos.

While it has been around for decades, it wasn’t until 1996 that its potential for being distributed globally was recognized. Credit goes to Dutch nurseries in South Africa who recognized its ability to be effortlessly propagated.

Originally an outdoor plant, the ZZ plant slowly grew in popularity as an indoor plant, thanks to its low-maintenance quality. While it enjoys bright light, it can thrive under low-light conditions as well.

The ZZ plant’s stems normally grow to around 2 or 3 feet (61-91 cm) but have the potential to get as tall as 5 feet (152 cm). Growth depends, however, on where it is placed (access to sunlight) and how much water it receives, which should correspond to the amount of light it gets.

You should take the final size of your ZZ plant into consideration when choosing the area where you want to display it. When put in a location where it can receive a good amount of sunlight (not direct sunlight), expect it to grow in diameter to about 2 feet upon maturity.

The ZZ plant doesn’t demand a lot for it to thrive, which is why it makes for a great indoor plant. It enjoys temperatures of 60 to 75°F (15 to 24°C) and doesn’t need a lot of water to grow. Be careful not to constantly overwater, as its stem and leaves could rot and die.

You can repot this houseplant only once a year, particularly during its first three to five years. It loves soil with high amounts of sand or perlite and thrives on pots that have good drainage holes. During April to August, its growing season, you can feed it with diluted fertilizer once every month.

Like any houseplants, the ZZ plant needs trimming, so prune it by just cutting the yellow leaflets. Its stem can be pruned as well by cutting it at the tip or you can remove it altogether to keep all the stems within the same size.

4. It looks stunning on its own

The ZZ plant’s best trait is probably its ability to look beautiful on its own. You don’t have to plant it with other indoor plants to look lush and more attractive.

Its leaves are full and glossy enough to attract any plant lover. In addition, it doesn’t attract pests, so you can rest assured that its leaves will continue to shine when simply given enough sunlight and water.

No wonder the Zanzibar Gem is on the top of interior landscapists’ list when thinking of beautiful, low-maintenance indoor plants to fill homes or commercial establishments. It’s eye-catching, versatile, and an easy plant to grow and maintain.
